Touting locally sourced ingredients prepared in healthy ways, East Village new kid HoQ Restaurant appears to be off to a decent start, but slow service issues related to minimal staffing need to be ironed out for it to really flourish. The food is good and usually nicely presented, although the portion sizes may not be quite big enough to satisfy hearty appetites. The restaurant is also on the small side, tastefully decorated in a modern, minimalist style that gives it a hip, urban edge.
The frequently changing menus aren't large either, but do offer some interesting variety. For lunch, a flavorful burger trio includes open-faced beef, lamb and salmon sliders ($12), and a chicken salad wrap special with homemade root fries ($10) tasted light and fresh. We can’t recommend the shrimp bisque ($5); however, diners might fare better with other soup choices. For dessert, the vanilla ice cream was the best part of a chocolate lava cake ($8) that was good, but not great.
HoQ serves lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Don’t get in a hurry, service tends to slow down as the place fills up.
