Iowa City locals rave about Devotay, and with its cozy, artsy atmosphere and outstanding food, why shouldn’t they? The owners use regional and organic meats, dairy and produce whenever possible, making this restaurant an ideal choice for a fresh, flavorful meal. (A “Hall of Farm” board at the entrance recognizes local farm partners who supply products and ingredients.)
Spicy aromas and energetic Bollywood music hit customers the moment they walk in, and a rainbow of colorful tablecloths and dim lighting create an eclectic yet romantic vibe. Food is served tapas-style with a vast selection of “pinxtos” (little bites), small plates and full-sized entrees to consider. Standouts from our visit included a grilled sirloin skewer with green olives and blue cheese ($2), lamb/beef albondigas meatballs with a red wine caramel sauce ($9.50), and an expertly cooked classic paella ($26). Devotay’s drink menu highlights Spanish wines and sherries, but the full bar is also stocked with beer and all the makings for handcrafted cocktails.
One slight quirk: The owners prefer customers pay in cash, but will accept Visa and MasterCard.
