Located within the Shops at Roosevelt strip mall, the Cheese Shop brims with cases of cheese, shelves of wine and beer, inventories of spreads and crackers, and a selection of food-related gifts. Several high-top tables line the window; there’s also one large table and counter seating. The energetic cheesemongers love to talk shop and are happy to offer samples and stories about anything in the case.
Cheese and meat plates ($12) include three choices; they might originate from a farm in Iowa or a producer halfway around the world. Products arrive at the table neatly arranged on a large, round platter as servers explain the origins and characteristics of each. The proprietors have also added “toasties” (grilled cheese sandwiches on local artisanal bread) and mac and cheese to the menu, along with inventive lunch and dinner specials.
Check out the in-house chalkboard for wines by the glass (usually $7 to $11), craft beer on tap, a couple of dessert wines and the occasional hard cider. Corkage fees don’t apply to bottles purchased in the store.
