Located in Kansas City’s vibrant Crossroads Arts District (with sister restaurants in California), Cafe Gratitude’s building is just as trendy and inviting as its surrounding neighborhood. Wood benches with comfortable pillows contrast nicely with the industrial chrome lighting and homey brick walls, and the hipster ambience adds flair to simple yet innovative meals.
There’s no shortage of choices at this vegan, organic restaurant. The menu overflows with inventive meatless options, all with whimsical names like I Am Pure, I Am Renewed and I Am Whole. The I Am Grounded starter ($8) satisfies with roasted sweet potatoes and a fragrant mint coconut chutney, and we also enjoyed the I Am Gracious, a hemp seed pesto bowl with quinoa, kale, tomatoes and sprouts ($10). Even without meat, filling entrees like the I Am Transformed corn tacos with black beans, brown rice, guacamole and cheese ($12) guarantee diners won’t go away hungry. Most items are hearty enough for lunch or dinner; consider bringing a date or a group of people to taste a variety of dishes.
The juices and smoothies are tasty and refreshing, if a bit pricy, and dessert options include cakes, bars and macaroons. Meals at Cafe Gratitude can be a little expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for in the quality of the ingredients.
