A work of art all its own, the 49-room boutique Hotel Ignacio plays nicely with its neighbors. Just down the street, you can take in a show at the Fabulous Fox Theater, walk through a sculpture garden or explore the beautiful St. Louis University campus. But first, you’ll need to pry yourself away from your room, which isn’t easy because of the Tempur-Pedic mattress, rain shower and soft bamboo towels. The front-desk staff kicks off stays on a cheery note. Many of them are St. Louis University students, and they sure know something about customer service. They’re eager to provide dinner recommendations and will deliver an extra toothbrush to your room so quickly it’s as if their life depended on it.
Rooms come in four themes reflecting the artsy neighborhood: fine arts, performing art, architecture and music. Each room contains an oversize portrait depicting that theme (for example, a portrait of a piano in the music rooms). Other fun touches include large flat-screen TVs framed like paintings and funky spherical lamps on either side of the bed. It's all more than enough to help us forget the room was a bit on the small side. A cozy common lounge provides a perfect reading spot with an electric fireplace, or you can walk hallways doubling as art galleries.
The Triumph Grill (a swanky lunch and dinner spot) and a European motorcycle shop are attached to the hotel, adding to the eclectic vibe. Room rates start at $160.
