Jeremy Popelka and Stephanie Trenchard provide the kind of story Midwesterners love. The husband-and-wife team built a national reputation with their glasswork before deciding the Midwest would provide a better quality of life, and they settled in the artist-friendly confines of Door County. Appreciating the blue-collar ethos of Sturgeon Bay, they established their studio and gallery in a cement-block building in a former shipyard. Visitors will find Stephanie behind the counter, eager to share the details on their specialty of “inclusions,” which consist of glass sculptures encased within larger glass blocks. Most of the pieces have a folk art sensibility, with intriguing interpretations of flowers, birds and even Emily Dickinson poems. On many days, the studio doors are open, letting guests watch Jeremy and Stephanie working glass in their furnace. On many Saturdays, they actually invite visitors into the space for an even closer view.
