At My Mother’s Kitchen, owner-cook Carol Simmons serves memorable plates of Southern-style fare created using family recipes she learned in her mom’s Natchez, Mississippi, kitchen. Guests get whatever Carol feels like making Tuesday through Sunday at her eatery on Chicago’s west side. The casual, 30-seat dining room is cozy and welcoming, and a chalkboard menu lists the daily entrees and sides.
This is comfort food at its best: succulent fried chicken (available in all-white, all-dark or mixed servings), crispy fried catfish, smothered pork steaks, turkey wings and fragrant seafood gumbo complemented by sweet cabbage, mac and cheese, green beans, red beans and rice, collard greens, fried okra and cornbread. Meals entail generous servings of a meat and two sides for reasonable prices of $9.99 to $12.99. Save room for dessert ($2.50): Carol’s sweet potato pie, lemon cake, banana pudding and signature fruit cobblers are worth the calorie splurge.
Sweet tea is the drink of choice, but diners are welcome to BYOB.
