For satisfying South of the Border cuisine in northwest Iowa, Los Pueblos is the place to go. Visitors won’t find anything fancy, just bountiful portions of nicely seasoned Mexican food served in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Owner Florencia Smith, a native of Oaxaca, Mexico, opened the restaurant in 2003.
The bright red building has arched windows overlooking a deck extending across the front. In nice weather, diners can eat at bright yellow circular picnic tables outside. Inside, decor features yellow walls, a tiled floor, and wooden tables and chairs. Plastic booths separated by wooden dividers to create a sense of privacy line one wall. The large front windows flood the place with light, and walls showcase typical Mexican-themed adornment—wide-brimmed bejeweled hats, beer signs and paintings done in brilliant colors. In the center of the room, tall leafy plants surround a three-tiered water fountain.
The menu features a fairly standard array of classic Mexican dishes along the lines of enchiladas, tacos, fajitas and burritos, as well as several seafood dishes and a few American entrees. Much of the food is homemade, including seven hot sauces and tasty margaritas in four flavors (the mango is terrific). Chips and salsa are fresh, and our enchiladas overflowed with spicy pork filling. Lunch prices run a reasonable $7 to $9; dinners range from $9 to $19.
