Most visitors come to the Iowa Great Lakes region to kick back and relax, not wine and dine. But if you’re looking for an upscale evening, Yesterdays offers an alternative to burger joints and is considered by locals to be the best seafood restaurant in the area. Open seasonally, Yesterdays has been a local landmark since 1984. Inside, Louis Icart prints on the walls set the tone above wooden booths and tables.
The menu changes depending upon availability, with nightly specials written on small chalkboards delivered to tables. Typical entrees might include snapper, yellow fin tuna, Canadian walleye, sea scallops, shrimp and lobster tail, with sauces and presentations varying depending on the chef’s whims. We tried the Greek tilapia with feta and kalamata olives and expertly prepared salmon only hindered by a bland chipotle sauce. There’s also a teppanyaki option that lets customers watch their meals being prepared with flair at a tableside grill. We suggest saving room for the excellent creme brulee or Key lime pie.
For diners who aren’t fond of seafood, Yesterdays serves charbroiled steaks, chicken, pork and pasta. Most entrees hover between $20 to $30; a few sandwiches and salads cost about $10. The restaurant has one of the best wine collections in the area, with approximately 60 reds and whites hailing from California, New Zealand, Italy, France and Australia. The professional service reminded us of what we'd get in a big-city restaurant.
