Satisfy your sweet tooth, as well as your stomach and your nostalgic streak, in this unusual destination that celebrates the past.
A fourth generation 'soda jerk' who custom blends chocolate malts at Main Street Galleria described it as, 'A trip to the past - or your childhood,' which was exactly how it felt. Chocolate peanut butter fudge that recalled peanut butter cups sat near homemade orange cream fudge. Dozens of bins overflowed with old-fashioned candy, including jawbreakers and saltwater taffy. Shiny salmon and aqua-colored teacups, with a matching teapot and creamer pitcher, sat beside 1950s costume jewelry. A vintage eagle-stamped round ceramic jar cost $20 and another that resembled a cow sold for $125. And the soda fountain area, where shakes and phosphates have been served almost continuously since 1893, featured wrought iron 'ice cream' chairs and tables. Dozens of tin wall signs replicated photos of celebrities such as Lucille Ball and Don Knotts, while a huge display of Coca Cola memorabilia stood near homemade pickles and relishes. When my malt ($4.75) needed extra chocolate and malt, the soda jerk gladly delivered. Additional soda fountain treats included banana splits, giant cookies and frozen coffee. In the Galleria's UpStairs Tea Room perfectly sweetened coleslaw, with a sprinkling of celery seeds, accompanied a Smoked Gouda Turkey Wrap ($7.99) packed full of thin-sliced turkey and smoky cheese. Treat yourself with sweets and sandwiches from Main Street Galleria and pick up a vintage treasure too.
