Make a reservation to visit Avalon Café, where creative and beautifully prepared dishes are served amid casually elegant surroundings and 19th century charm.
Located in a lovely, renovated 1848 cottage described as 'White Lace,' Avalon Café has become a destination for great dining since it opened, in 1994. And, with the its close proximity to Fort Leavenworth, in Leavenworth, KS, the restaurant has hosted numerous dinners for military brass, over the years. In fact, several certificates of appreciation from Fort officers lined the entryway walls. Tall, crown and floor moldings in each dining room accented neutral walls, and each room featured a fireplace. Rosebuds and white linen decorated the tables where we sat. Bloody Mary and Venetian Sunrise cocktails ($7) were generous pours while the fluffy Veggie Omelet ($8.50) burst with creamy goat cheese and tender vegetables. Grilled Italian Sausage and Eggs ($11) featured meaty, moist and flavorful sausage, beside perfectly runny fried eggs. Unfortunately, the biscuits and gravy didn't impress us and breakfast potatoes could have used more salt. But service was terrific, with a casually elegant ambience where diners wore everything from jeans and bandanas to 'church clothes.' Dinner patrons may choose unusual options such as Wild Boar Loin ($26), or Duckling ($28), alongside pastas and steak burgers, while wine selections range from local favorite, Pirtle Winery, to dozens more U.S. and international options. This is definitely a place that's worth revisiting - several times.
