Traveling North Setterbo Road, it's easy to zip by the unassuming white barnlike structure with the red tandem bicycle perched over the door. After all, there's just a small sign out front. So slow down, turn onto the gravel road encircling the building and get ready for some good sipping.
Opened in 2008, Tandem Ciders produces artisanal hard ciders using Michigan apples grown by local farmers. The building houses the fermentation area and the tasting room. The airy yet relatively small tasting room feels like a neighborhood pub, with warm and welcoming salmon-color walls, gleaming wood counter and barstool seating for eight. You can try samples of any of the 11 featured ciders, including Farmhouse, Smackintosh (sweet and tart), The Crabster (crisp, tart and dry) and Honey Pie. We admit, hard ciders aren't for everyone—they can be too sweet for some—but we think you'll quickly became a convert after sampling local faves Honey Pie and Pretty Penny. The tastes were crisp and clean, not too sweet at all. Try pairing them with fresh cherries and a raclette from Leelanau Cheese Company—delicious.
