Anchored by a large white barn on a bluff overlooking the Root River Valley, this resort has become a popular destination for bicyclists and families. Campers can spread out on more than 170 sites (tents $30 a night, RVs $36 to $44) along grassy tiers that give everyone a view. The barn basement has hostel-style bunk beds for $25 a night and a couple of private rooms to rent. In the fall, the forest shimmers with color; in the summer and on warm days, side doors at the indoor heated pool are opened wide to let in the breeze.
The on-site Little River General Store rents tubes, canoes and kayaks for floats down the Root River into Lanesboro. Guests can also rent bikes and hop on 66 miles of Root River and Harmony-Preston State Trails. It’s about a 5-mile ride over to Preston to the west or Lanesboro to east; both towns are perfectly located for restroom breaks, ice cream or lunch. Or dine on smoked ribs, burgers and brisket in the Old Barn.
The 18-hole, par-70 golf course draws plenty of duffers; outdoor-types can also try their hands at hooking fresh brown or rainbow trout in the river. Keep an eye out for deer, wild turkeys and other wildlife.
