Even though the Cleveland Play House isn’t new (it’s actually the oldest regional theater company in the nation), it does have a fresh home in the revamped, reconfigured Allen Theater. CPH has taken this nearly century-old Art Deco theater and turned it into a sophisticated cutting-edge performance space.
CPH divided the old 2,500-seat theater into three different venues—the new Allen, Second Stage featuring a 300-seat reconfigurable floor plan, and The Helen, an intimate 150-seat lab theater. Most performances are staged in the Allen, where CPH has carefully blended superior special-effect technology with the original gingerbread interior. With just 500 super-plush seats to work with (in CPH’s signature orange shade), every spot offers an outstanding view. The rotunda lobby feels more like a swanky living room; its sleek white couches, three bars and two gallery spaces make intermission a party.
The CPH productions (September through May) focus mainly on contemporary dramas, comedies, and musicals created or selected specifically for northeast Ohio audiences. Ticket prices vary by show, but usually range from $35 to $70. Guests can park in the adjacent Playhouse Square garage off Chester Avenue for $10.
