Editor's Review

With soft-serve cones, slushies and hot dogs, this old-fashioned seasonal ice cream stand reflects the area’s laid-back cabin culture.

While exploring bike trails, weekend water-ski shows, one of Minnesota’s most popular state parks and the Glacial Lakes Scenic Byway, visitors inevitably find their way to the Deep Freeze, a walk-up ice cream stand in New London. This is the kind of place where the staff already knows what local kids will order and can recommend the best cones for everyone else.

Kids tend toward the Flavor Burst cones swirled with ribbons of green apple, cotton candy or bubble gum flavoring, while adults often opt for a Crunchi Cone—ice cream mixed with bits of Heath toffee, malted milk balls, Reese’s pieces, Nerds and other candy. For hungrier patrons, there are barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, tacos, malts and floats. This ice cream melts fast in a hot car; better to grab a seat at the shaded picnic tables facing the school across the road.

The Deep Freeze is open seasonally and only accepts cash and check.
