A shady garden out front, a cozy dining area and a short but tasty menu featuring meats smoked in-house all elevate this cafe well above regular old coffee shop status.
Settle in for hearty breakfasts like shrimp with hash and eggs; spinach omelets; or the Dale’s scrambler with hash, two eggs, provolone cheese, onion and sausage. This is satisfying fuel for hungry hikers and bikers, and half-orders are available for smaller appetites. Smoothies and coffee drinks (the Vietnamese coffee is especially good) wash it all down and complement the caramel pecan biscotti and other made-daily sweets.
For lunch, popular choices include the smoked pastrami Reuben, a smoky pulled pork sandwich and burger specials like the Washington Carver slathered with peanut butter, locally cured bacon and cream cheese. The Philly steak burger piles on peppers, onions and cheese. Desserts and Chocolate Shoppe ice creams are worth saving a little room for.
Don’t dawdle when heading to lunch, though—the cafe opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays (8 a.m. on the weekends) and closes at 1 p.m. sharp. Closed Thursdays.
