Open since 2011, Turning Waters stands within two blocks of a riverside beach and close to the shops and restaurants of Wabasha's historical downtown. Despite the adventure theme, there's nothing rustic about this well-appointed bed-and-breakfast. Comfortable rooms feature spacious beds and niceties like chocolates, Aveda products and fleece robes. It’s perfectly fine to just settle in and relax, but proprietors Ritchie Mann and Michael Anderson also host kayak trips down the Mississippi River, as well as lots of other guided outdoor activities.
Food-wise, the backyard garden and resident chickens provide ingredients for delicious breakfasts like Man Eggs scrambled with scallions, goat cheese, hard salami and avocado; pancakes crammed with bacon bits; or the Gigantor —potatoes, Vidalia onion, cheese, Canadian bacon and 12 eggs topped with a pastry crust and baked in a cast-iron skillet. This is the kind of hearty fare that can fuel guests through an active day; Ritchie and Michael also pour cold beer and wine to help visitors unwind in the evenings. Rooms and suites start at $200 a night, which feels just right for a higher-end B&B.
