On Wednesday and Saturdays from May through December, the vibrant Holland Farmers Market comes to life with more than 70 vendor booths selling Michigan produce, baked goods, artisanal cheeses, breads, specialty spreads, bedding plants and hormone-free meats. (As the holidays approach, fresh evergreen garlands, wreaths and Christmas trees begin to appear.) Street performers provide a soundtrack by fiddling, clogging, picking a banjo or performing magic tricks.
The Holland Farmers Market lineup also includes fun educational activities for all ages. A Wednesday morning Kid Series features storytelling and live performances, and on Saturday mornings, the Chef Series demonstrates how to prepare dishes using market ingredients. Other noteworthy events include The Carve, an annual collegiate fruit and vegetable carving competition, and the yearly Salsa Showdown, a pro/amateur contest that draws big crowds.
Food trucks provide the possibility of a prepared lunch—hot dogs, tamales or sausages, and DeBoer's bakery truck sells fresh coffee and baked goods.
