Local celebrity chef Zack Burell's Table 45, located in downtown Cleveland's InterContinental Hotel, rocks a culture-crossing menu (French, Indian, American and Asian influences are all there) focused on local and sustainablly raised ingredients. The results are fantastic.
There were plenty of open tables waiting when we arrived a little after 6 on a Saturday night. Compared to the surrounding hotel, and even the surrounding city, Table 45 has an oasislike feel: Warm, welcoming, intimate. Blonde wood on the bar and open kitchen and tables, black leather chairs and booths, white-gray walls, and warm, golden lighting all give the open and spacous restaurant a cozy feel.
Our friendly waiter recommended we start with the naan of the day. Naan of the day? We would now like to have this naan, every day: Warm, thin triangles sprinkled with cheese and oil and a small bit of roasted garlic served with dipping sauces, including a tangy goat cheese hummus. A generous portion of heirloom tomato salad arrived dressed lightly with oil and vinegar and sprinkled with basil, perfectly complementing the sweet and juicy tomatoes.
For entrees, an order of ahi tuna futomaki, rolls of fresh, lightly seared ahi tuna stuffed with crab, arrived with a crunchy-salty tempura and seaweed wrap that provided delicious balance to the heavy slices of fish. The tandoor chicken, served with potato salad and grilled corn, played with the concept of a traditional American barbecue dinner. The chicken, heavily spiced with paprika, proved juicy and wonderful. Other options included grilled steak, rack of lamb, vegetarian lasagne and cioppino.
By the time the dessert list arrived, we were stuffed, and so we passed on the sin-sational chocolate cake and the studded fresh fruit tart. Pricing is moderately high, around $9 for the naan of the day and $20 to $40 for entrees, but the meal was a fantastic culinary adventure.
