If you’re visiting Green Bay, chances are good that the Packers had something to do with getting you there, and if that’s the case, you’ll find Green Bay Distillery a convenient place to grab a meal and brew. You can walk from here to Ray Nitschke Field, where the team practices, and to Lambeau Field, the storied home of the Packers franchise. But even if you know nothing about football, the menu and cavernous dance hall atmosphere satisfies. For an appetizer, try the soft pretzels made with Wisconsin-brewed beer and served with ale-tinged cheese sauce ($4.99) or the Wisconsin white buffalo cheese curds, the famous battered fried cheese dipped in Buffalo-style hot sauce and topped with crumbled blue cheese ($7.99). The thick and flavorful brat and cheese soup costs just $2.99 for a generous cup, and the cheese curd burger tops ground sirloin with a salty, sinful and totally delicious cheese curd patty ($7.49). Other menu options include a Packers-inspired Green and Gold pizza, topped with sliced yellow and green sweet peppers ($11.49), plus an array of specialty salads, wraps and sandwiches.
Green Bay Distillery loves to party, and daily drink specials fuel the crowd (from what we can tell, despite the name, it does not craft its own vodka). It was tough to get a handle on what the vibe is like when the place is busy; when we stopped in for dinner at 8:30 on a Sunday, our group was the only one in the huge place. But still, service was prompt and friendly, and all of the bad-for-us food tasted oh-so-good. We’d definitely go back next time we’re in town.
