Spoon Market resides in a brick storefont along Market Street in downtown Wooster, next door to the swanky St. Paul Hotel and across the street from the delicious City Square Steakhouse. We hoped the excellence of the surrounding businesses was a good omen, and we were not disappointed.
The pint-size Spoon Market blends a small upscale market with a small, simple cafe: A butcher takes up the back of the store, and in the front, an artisanal cheese counter, a dry-goods market (wine, vinegar, beer, crackers, ice cream, soup, olives and more), and a cafe greet visitors. Long, communal-style tables fill the middle. The decor is urban and of-the-moment, with exposed brick, open ductwork, metal industrial shelving and chalkboard menus. Very hip.
The simple breakfast menu consists of breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal, and a la carte eggs and meats. The Lousy Hunter ($3.95) features hummus, cream cheese, roasted red peppers and lettuce on a bagel, and the Blazing Saddle ($5.95) contains chorizo, eggs, cheddar, salsa and guacamole grilled in a wrap. The lunch menu featured movie-titled sandwiches, such as The Hangover ( $7.85) with roast beef, tomato, dill pickle, banana peppers, jalapeno peppers, onion and mustard on baguette and Dr. Strangelove ($7.50), a portobella mushroom with roasted red pepper, goat cheese and pesto on ciabatta.
Breakfast was fantastic. The Blazing Saddle came out hot and melty, gooey with cheese and avocado in a crisp, toasted tortilla. The chorizo was spicy and the salsa mild and flavorful, making for a delicious texture and flavor contrast. With a hot cup of fresh, strong coffee, it was the perfect way to start the day.
