When it opened in 2007, the Flying Cupcake was the first cupcake bakery in Indiana. It has some competition now, but it is still a local favorite. Except for its roving truck, all four of its locations in the Indianapolis area, including a new spot on the north side, are decorated in vintage, shabby-chic decor—a charming setting for handfuls of sweetness.
The jumbo Red Velvet Elvis stars ($3.50); rich cream cheese frosting, red sprinkles and shaved white chocolate top this moist, dense cupcake with baked-in chocolate chunks. We also love the Cheeky Cherry Cheese, a combination of white cake and cheesecake topped with cherry filling, and the Salted Chocolate Caramel, chocolate cake filled with caramel and topped with chocolate-caramel ganache and sprinkles of salt.
