5 favorite cemetery strolls

When you step through the gates of an urban cemetery, the city seems to recede, replaced by acres of leafy serenity. Many cemeteries offer historical tours or pamphlets, but you don’t need to be in learning mode to stroll awhile and savor the changing of the seasons.

Lake View Cleveland (Pictured) Highlights include the James A. Garfield Monument and the glorious, Tiffany-designed Wade Memorial Chapel. (216) 421-2665; lakeviewcemetery.com [1]

Spring Grove Cincinnati This designated arboretum hosts many events and tours, including a September twilight walk. (513) 681-7526; springgrove.org [2]

Crown Hill Indianapolis Located on the tallest hill in the city, Crown Hill has great tours and fall concerts featuring music from The Phantom of the Opera. (317) 925-3800; crownhillhf.org [3]

Graceland Chicago Both the Chicago History Museum and the Chicago Architectural Foundation sponsor tours; one covers women of influence. (773) 525-1105; gracelandcemetery.org [4]

Elmwood Detroit The event schedule includes Halloween-theme outings every Saturday in October. (313) 567-3453; elmwoodhistoriccemetery.org [5]
