When in Lake Geneva, bistro fans should definitely put Sopra on their radar. This chic dinner-only eatery makes its home in a century-old building showcasing polished hardwood floors, a pressed-tin ceiling and a sophisticated neutral color palette. Sidewalk tables offer al fresco dining, weather permitting.
The short but appealing menu highlights seasonal, local ingredients—roasted golden beets, for example, or perhaps grilled pork tenderloin with asparagus and mixed wild mushrooms. Appetizers of both hot and cold varieties include salads, char-grilled baby octopus ($13), lobster wontons ($10) and a daily flatbread. In the entree category, choices take in inventive pastas such as fettuccine with smoked salmon, roasted garlic, spinach and tomato cream ($20); as well as duck, scallops, steak, pork and a few nightly specials. All meals begin with a loaf of warm bread and butter with sea salt. Desserts ($6 to $12) range from the standard crème brulee to s'mores. Thirsty? Sopra offers a selection of specialty martinis ($10 to $12), an impressive collection of top-quality microbrews and a well-balanced wine list.
Service is pleasant and prompt, but not rushed, for a great overall dining experience. Sopra is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
