It’s no wonder there was a wedding in progress in the rose garden when we arrived at the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens on a June afternoon. More than 100 weddings a year are held here. After ice cream treats from the gift shop, we picked up a map of the 52-acre gardens and walking paths for a pleasant stroll around the grounds. We especially liked the serene Japanese pond, waterfall and gardens.
Volunteers established this living museum in 1980, and today, more than 350 volunteers maintain the trees, plants and shrubs. Featured areas include a large collection of hostas, an English garden, a cacti garden, prairie wildflowers and grasses, and ornamental tree and shrub collections. Volunteers offer tours upon request. Admission is free. Enjoy free Sunday Music in the Garden concerts all summer long.
