Spruce Hill Inn and Cottages offers guests a comfortable compromise between a traditional B&B and a self-serve vacation rental. There's no actual inn at Spruce Hill. Instead there's a five-bedroom manor house, a four-bedroom lodge, and 28 one-bedroom cottages.
Cottages usually rent for $165 plus tax per night, but rates may change during peak times. The cottages are cozy, but not cramped. Private decks, sunrooms (alcoves) and skylights take them a few notches above basic. As do Jaccuzi tubs in every bathroom. Suite essentials such as cable and coffee pots are standard in all cottages, and many have outdoor extras like patio furniture and grills. Spruce Hill is adjacent to the Snow Trails ski resort.
Cottages are scattered throughout the Spruce Hill property in a semiwooded setting that feels a bit contrived (most of the cottages overlook a tiny greenish manmade pond) but does offer adequate privacy. Guests who have a deck will appreciate lingering under a starry sky. Guests in cottages without a deck can enjoy patio furniture placed throughout the property.
Breakfast is served family-style at the manor house between 8 and 9:30 a.m. by reservation. The food isn't cooked to order (get there a few minutes early to make sure your eggs are still hot), but there is a decent selection of breakfast meats along with breads, fruit, pancakes, cheesy hash browns, orange juice and coffee.
Spruce Hill isn't nearly as posh as the website makes it sound, but it is perfectly comfortable and is a good option for guests who want a little more privacy than a traditional B&B.
