Mansfield's original downtown, the Historic Carrousel District, features several blocks of shops and restaurants in beautifully restored Victorian-age buildings. Architectural details like tin ceilings, solid oak floors and wrought-iron fencing distinguish the buildings in Mansfield's main shopping and cultural district. Many of the shops close early on Saturdays, but Carrousel Antiques stays open a smidge later (until 5 p.m.), and if you're inside before 5, the staff will let you browse past closing time.
With four floors of antiques, vintage finds and just plain old stuff tastefully displayed, this store is a treasure hunt made easy. The store features the collections of more than 40 dealers, but it feels like a more cohesive store than most large antiques warehouses. Among the finds: Depression-Era kitchen gadgets, mid-50s toys, cases of costume jewelry and curios. The inventory is heavier on accessories and small items than on furniture and large pieces. There are no crafts. The staff is attentive, but never hovers, which makes browsing fun. Carrousel Antiques is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 .pm.
