Newton’s Holiday Inn Express is one of the better hotels in which to rest your weary head. This midlevel chain sits across the street from the old Maytag corporate headquarters, and it’s easy to see it was designed with the business traveler in mind. Rooms have desks and standard furniture; mattresses and pillows are soft and comfortable. The lobby and pool areas are hot spots for families with young kids.
Be aware, some rooms still carry a hint of stale cigarette smoke. Request a second- or third-floor room for updated furniture, flat-screen televisions and distance from the occasionally noisy lobby. Bathrooms are nothing special, but they are clean and include the usual travel-size shampoo, soap and lotion. The Continental breakfast provides both hot and cold options, such as gooey cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, pancakes and other expected fare.
The hotel is conveniently sited adjacent to downtown and within walking distance of bars, restaurants and shopping. Rates start at around $130.
