Editor's Review

The public square offers a handful of shops and the Warren Cultural Center but seems deserted on the weekend and houses many empty storefronts.

Greenfield's Public Square holds several impressive buildings: The courthouse at the center is tall and stately, and the renovated Warren Cultural Center takes you back to the Victorian Era. However, a walk around the square reveals a number of closed shops and empty storefronts, and not a lot of options for retail or dining. The town is working on development, and a planned restaurant in the basement of the cultural center promises to be a welcome addition.

Currently, few-and-far-between destinations on the square include the local movie theater and Ed and Eva's, a small shop full of works by Iowa artisans. J's Gifts offers a mix of old and new merchandise, including dishes, picture frames and handbags. It's not as cluttered as antiques stores can be and has reasonable prices. The Jewel Box is a small store selling the expected watches, necklaces and earrings, as well as a few collectibles. A catch-all establishment called Colors offers floral arrangements, kitchen items, tuxedo rental, bridal registries and home decor. Just off the square, Schildberg's Antique Car Museum showcases the prized cars of a local collector (open by appointment only).
