The small-town, family-friendly feel and the kind-hearted husband-and-wife owners, Joe and Diane Long, are the main attractions at this campground. The Longs make camping feel like staying at a friend's cabin; the couple is highly visible on the property during weekends and is genuinely interested in making sure everyone enjoys their stay.
Many campers visit from suburban Chicago or southern Wisconsin, and the crowd is a mix of families with young children and retirees seeking drawn by the good value, not-too-wild atmosphere, fun programming and proximity to Galena. The campground has 100 spots, most of which are occupied by RVs. Only a few people camp in tents; others rent one of the log cabins or two large teepees. In the center of the site, a sheltered, clean "camp kitchen" provides several sinks with running water and grills.
There’s a lot to keep kids busy at this KOA: whizzing down the water slide in the decent-size swimming pool, playing on the large playground, riding little motorized cars, playing basketball and volleyball, riding bikes, and bouncing on the huge, rainbow-color inflatable "jumping pillow." Other free activities include wine tasting, a kids' "hey ride," a Sunday pancake breakfast, themed weekends and nightly campfire s'mores. Yum.
