At Rocco's Restaurant, owners Linda and Warren Verteramo make guests feel like part of their Italian family. The couple met while working at the restaurant, founded in 1951 by Linda's parents, Rocco and Julia Ameduri. Married in 1976, the Verteramos have run Rocco’s since 1991.
The food is comforting and familiar. Billed as a family favorite, Linda's signature linguini ala tonno ($14.50) blends Italian-style tuna, pasta, mushrooms and olive oil in a dish reminiscent of tuna casserole. Of course, there's spaghetti ($10), gnocchi ($12.50) and ravioli ($10.50); lasagna makes an appearance on Friday and Saturday nights for $12.75. Pizzas are made from scratch daily, but we found the sauce a bit pasty and the crust a little cardboardish. Dessert options include cannoli, spumoni and Eli's cheesecake.
Though the place seats 150, customers should expect to wait for a table. Open for dinner only, Rocco's is a favorite dining institution among Notre Dame students and their families, as well visiting celebrities. Autographed photos of Regis Philbin, Mike Ditka, Taylor Swift and John Mellencamp line the walls.
