A popular Rockford-based franchise, Mary’s Market Cafe and Bakery tastes anything but cookie-cutter. The made-from-scratch baked goods, sandwiches, soups and flatbreads served within an airy loftlike space at Edgebrook Mall impress and satisfy every time (there's outdoor seating under the cherry red awning).
Breathe in the heady aroma of fresh baked cookies and freshly brewed coffee while you study the huge menu written in colored chalk on suspended blackboards. Soup selections always include French onion ($5.50), as well as a rotating inventory of chicken noodle, vegetable, sweet potato, mushroom and more ($4.75). Sandwich choices are equally extensive, spanning wraps, melts, burgers and clubs. Our favorite is the Brie and apple grilled cheese with pomegranate-cranberry spread ($8.50). We would have ranked the ultimate burger melt with smoked ham and Colby cheese higher if it hadn’t been overcooked beyond medium-rare as requested. There are also a dozen or so entree salads to consider.
Leave room for dessert. It's tough to narrow down the tempting cookies, bars and cupcakes filling the display cases. And Mary’s serves five different pie flavors daily: apple, cherry and seasonal fruit, sold whole and by the slice. As we tucked into the blueberry pie, chunky fruit spilled from beneath the golden lattice crust like purple lava. There wasn’t a crumb left.
