Rockford’s Swedish heritage comes to life at the John Erlander Mansion, formerly home to the prominent Rockford businessman and now serving as the headquarters of the Rockford Swedish Historical Society.
The 1871 Italianate mansion’s decor, woodwork and appointments have never been altered, but have been completely restored to represent authentic, turn-of-the-century life just as it was when Erlander lived here. Everything in the swank Haight Village home was either brought by Erlander from his native Sweden or handmade by local, Swedish immigrant craftsmen. An accomplished artist, John’s daughter Mary painted the borders in the parlor and many of the pictures that decorate the mansion.
The site is open Tuesday through Friday by appointment, and on Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.
