Open since 2003 on the west side of Fort Wayne along the Jefferson Boulevard corridor, Chop's Steak and Seafood is modern and upscale so don't hold the strip-mall location against it. The dining room and bar can get loud, but the food is top-notch and servers are knowledgeable and sincere.
The two-page menu details beef egg rolls, sesame-seared ahi tuna and a risotto of the day, but the steaks are the stars. Most dinners come with soup or salad and fresh bread. The signature chopped salad consists of shredded lettuce with blue cheese, hard-cooked egg, carrot, tomato and bacon, but could use a little heavier hand with the dressing. The steaks are tremendous: A tender 7-ounce filet ($20.95) arrives with bacon-cheddar mashed potatoes, veggies and horseradish butter; a monstrous 14-ounce black and blue ribeye ($23.95) comes with roasted red potatoes, veggies and Stilton butter. We also love the grilled shrimp served with a horseradish-laced cocktail sauce.
Chop's offers martinis, craft beer and a vast wine list. At $5.50, filled-to-the-brim glasses of 10 house wines have got to be one of the best drink deals in town. An adjoining wine bar offers a slightly more casual menu that includes a pretzel bun burger, pork belly sliders, and an Asian-inspired chicken and waffle dish. Open for lunch Monday through Friday, dinner Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays. Reservations are a good idea.
