Midwest Living Recommends
Despite its limited menu, Sara's Harmony Way is one of the best eateries in New Harmony -- and the only place to sample Indiana's very first commercial beer recipe.
Housed in a former cooper shop, Sara's Harmony Way's claim to fame is that it brews Harmonie Bier, a dark German lager based on the original Harmonist beer recipe from 1816 -- the first commercial beer brewed in Indiana. Visitors can order a full glass or a tasting flight, which includes several other carefully selected regional beers. Sara's Harmony Way also serves a limited menu of cheese and sausage platters, dips and spreads, and sweet treats. The house specialty is lavender cookies ($4), small shortbread treats with bits of lavender baked in. The first bite might remind diners of a lavender sachet, but the next bite and the next soon prove to be addicting. With its quick and friendly service, Sara's Harmony Way is the perfect place to stop during a shopping spree or prior to an Under the Beams concert at the Rapp-Owen Granary. Despite its simple menu, it easily rivals the few other restaurants in town.
