With its vintage diner decor, large dessert menu and reasonable prices, Pop's Grill is a good choice for families visiting New Harmony.
Pop's Grill and Ice Cream Shop is all about Route 66, with chrome-plated walls and decor that includes vintage license plates and road maps. Visitors can choose a table or grab a swivel stool at the stainless-steel counter, where burgers, fries and banana splits are served up the old-fashioned way. On our recent visit, we loved the American steak burger, a thick, juicy patty with mile-high toppings; it was a steal at $4.95. We also enjoyed the thin-cut sweet potato fries, topped with cinnamon and brown sugar, and the old-fashioned phosphate sodas ($1.79). Be sure to save room for dessert. Options include milkshakes, banana splits, ice cream sundaes, and other delicious, nostalgic treats. Our only reservation about Pop's Grill is the casual hours it keeps. The eatery is supposed to open at 11:30 a.m. Sundays, but when we visited on a recent Sunday, a chalkboard outside said "open at 12 or so," and the owners didn't arrive until 12:40. It's worth the wait, but don't count on Pop's if you're on a tight schedule.
