This old-school butcher shop carries high-quality meats that are hard to find elsewhere in the city.
It seems that every high-end restaurant in Indianapolis now lists items with the Smoking Goose Meatery ingredients. The old-school butcher shop is a recent offshoot of Goose the Market, a local deli that has become both a foodie mecca and neighborhood gathering spot. The Meatery is the hub of the company's commercial distribution, so it is tucked away in a primarily commercial district. But it does welcome walk-in customers, who can choose from a chalkboard menu of products. When we visited, the menu included 11 types of sausages ($5-8/pound), 12 smoked meats ($4-21/pound), five types of salumi ($4-10/pound) and seven larder meats ($7-23/pound), such as hard-to-find duck leg confit. We tried the thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon, the garlic sausage and the gourmet black-truffle bologna, all of which were perfectly seasoned, juicy and delicious. If you can't transport raw meat back home, head across the street to locally owned Flat 12 Bierwerks, which offers Smoking Goose protein plates with its ales.
