Atchison's trolley tours cover the Missouri River town's elegant bluff-top mansions, Western frontier-era history and nationally known haunted sites.
Home to 11,000 people and an unknown number of ghosts, Atchison claims to be one of the most haunted towns in Kansas. The Victorian mansions crowning Missouri River bluffs lend themselves to scary settings for documented paranormal activity. Learn more on the Atchison Trolley Tours offered April through October. Come Halloween season, this sleepy river town gets scary when tour guides dial up the creepy commentary (including a special visit to the Sallie House featured on the Travel and Discovery Channels). Trolley tours travel Atchison's hilly, brick streets passing hometown sweetheart Amelia Earhart's Birthplace Museum as well as the Muchnic Gallery and Victorian Evah Cray Mansion. The 1893 St. Benedict College campus has a chapel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Along Riverview Drive, see the Amelia Earhart Bridge built in 1938, the Benedictine Convent of Mount St. Scholastica and Molly's Hollow where reportedly her lovesick ghost wails. Trolleys pass the still-operating 1872 Atchison Casting Foundry and the 1868 Trinity Episcopal Church where Earhart was baptized. Regular season tours cost $6 for adults and $2 for children. Haunted tours cost $13. Tours depart from the Atchison Chamber of Commerce-Santa Fe Depot parking lot.
