One peek out of Amelia Earhart's bedroom window and you'll know why the view of the rolling Missouri River valley inspired her to fly. Atchison's soaring hometown sweetheart grew up with her grandparents in a bluff-top, 1840s Victorian cottage, which is now the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum (admission: $4 adults, $1 children). The museum is surrounded by late 1800s mansions along hilly brick-paved streets. Many were featured on "Saturday Evening Post" magazine covers. Open for self-guided tours, the completely restored Earhart home is run by the 99s Women's Pilots Organization founded by Earhart in 1929. View original family furnishings, artifacts, portraits and memorabilia chronicling Earhart's childhood, personal life and flying career. Depending upon your interest, a tour can take 20 minutes to an hour. Every summer, Atchison celebrates Earhart's flight legacy with the Memorial Day Weekend Antique Airplane Fly-In and the Amelia Earhart Festival in July. There's also the commemorative Amelia Earhart earthworks sculpture outside town on 274th Road near the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway.
