Located in Atchison's swank bluff-top neighborhood, Tuck-U-Inn at Glick Mansion offers old-world elegance, homey comforts and gourmet breakfast.
Back in the late 1800s, Atchison enjoyed great wealth as the town west of the Mississippi with the most millionaires per capita. The Tuck-U-Inn at Glick Mansion Bed and Breakfast gives us a sense of how the well-to-do lived in Atchison's heyday. Five upstairs guest rooms are elegantly decorated in an Atchisonian historic theme with four-posters and lush fabrics (all but one have a private bath). Lizzy's Attic suite sleeps six, while the Amelia Earhart room is most original to the house. Rates start at $115 a night (wireless Internet included). Innkeeper Chris Wildy plays the grand piano in the two-story circular foyer to call guests to evening wine tastings and gourmet breakfasts served in the glass-domed conservatory or formal dining room. The fresh fruit breakfast parfait -- layered in a cut crystal flute -- is almost too pretty to eat. Next comes fluffy quiche, cayenne pepper-and-sugar-dusted bacon strips and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. Ask Chris for her recipes, especially the blueberry blanket pastry. Don't leave Atchison before exploring the inn's swank neighborhood, boasting many historic homes featured on the cover of the "Saturday Evening Post." Tuck-U-Inn is around the corner from pioneering aviatrix Amelia Earhart's home, the Muchnic Gallery and downtown shopping.
