Editor's Review

Spend a weekend in Missouri River town Atchison, exploring mansion-museums, historic Lewis and Clark sites, and shopping decor store Nell Hill's.

Atchison has plenty to be proud of and share with visitors. Sitting pretty atop the Missouri River bluffs, elegant Victorian mansions recall Atchison's heyday in the late 1800s when it had more millionaires per capita than any town west of the Mississippi. Pioneering aviatrix Amelia Earhart hails from Atchison (her childhood home is now a museum), as does 21st-century tastemaker Mary Carol Garrity, whose home decor draws thousands of shoppers each year. Comforts of small-town life are evident in the slower pace, friendly people and annual celebrations (May's Antique Airplane Fly-In and summer's Atchison County Fair). Cultural attractions include a Lewis and Clark historic site and mansions turned museums. Atchison Trolley Tours gives good overviews of the river town's historic role in shaping the American frontier, railroad expansion, presidential politics and the Civil War. Guided tours depart from the Atchison County Historical Society museum and visitors center. Come Halloween, tours take an eerie twist, with ghost stories told about numerous sites, earning Atchison's reputation as the most haunted town in Kansas.
