Chicago's iconic hometown department store Marshall Field's became Macy's several years ago, but the State Street location still holds rank as one of the world's most enthralling shopping experiences. Anchoring a revitalized State Street shopping district, the 1907 building designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham boasts renowned architectural features, including the signature green corner clocks and Tiffany glass mosaic domed ceiling, both highlighted in a self-guided audio tour (info available at the seventh-floor visitors center).
Inside, escalators zigzag through an open atrium linking eight floors of fashion, accessories, beauty products, home decor, linens and dining. Shoppers circle an archipelago of cosmetic and jewelry counters, designer handbags and the Beauty Bar nail salon within a soaring two-story gallery supported by Corinthian columns.
Macy's has preserved cherished vestiges of the legendary Marshall Field's, such as Frango Mints and holiday dining under the 45-foot-tall Great Tree in the Walnut Room restaurant, where the recently reintroduced Mrs. Hering's 1890 original chicken potpie ($11) and Frango Mint chocolate ice cream pie ($5) are popular lunch choices. The Walnut Room Wine Bar and a gourmet food court serve fare from Macy's Culinary Council celebrity chefs; the ground-floor food court near the Pedway offers to-go eats and more casual dining.
Vacation-shopping packages and special annual events, such as the spring Flower Show and fall's celebrity-studded Glamorama fashion week extravaganza, draw tourists from around the world.
