It's not often you get a unanimous answer when you ask people where to dine, but in Cedarburg the answer is always the same: The Farmstead. Once you've dined there, you'll understand why. Tucked into an older stone home that's rather hidden behind some commercial buildings and two large pine trees, the restaurant is on the smaller side, with about eight seats at the bar and a smattering of tables in two adjacent rooms. Not surprisingly, given its name, the decor is on the rustic side, with plain wooden tables and metal-backed chairs, plus farm implements adorning the walls. The food is what draws people, of course, and it's great. Steak cooked over a tiny open-air grill behind the bar infuses the entire restaurant with the most delectable scent. The favorites are the garlic smashed black Angus steak and the tenderloin bite appetizers: medium-rare tenderloin tips served on a crostini and topped with a homemade pickle slice. The menu also features chicken, fish and ribs, but it's not a huge list. There's a full bar and a well-thought-out wine list. Service is friendly and efficient, and prices are moderate (entrees run roughly $18-$35). The only drawback is that The Farmstead doesn't take reservations, and because it's so popular, you're almost certain to face a wait, even if you come early or late.
