A seamless blend of quaint decor and beautifully made pastries makes this bakery a destination for breakfast, lunch, afternoon teaor just a sweet snack.
That expression "blink and you'll miss it" applies to this destination along Cincinnati's Madison Road -- mostly because the combination bakery-cafe doesn't face the street. You have to turn into an alley to park your car and enter the front door; the bakery backs to Madison Road. It took us a couple of rounds around the block before we figured it out, but we were persistent about it because locals told us this is THE place for sweets and custom cakes. Since 1983, BonBonerie has turned out beautiful, decadent baked goods, and the offerings in the case celebrate the time of year in a striking way. We visited on the Cincinnati Reds' Opening Day, which is something of a holiday in town, and the cookie case was filled with frosted baseball cookies (as well as daffodil and tulip sugar cookies, to herald spring). We tried a cinnamon roll and the famous chocolate tuxedo cupcake, which is a high-end version of a Hostess chocolate cupcake. We sat at a little table for two near the entrance, along a window lined with aprons strung together like a valance, and watched the bakers working behind the counter to churn out the day's cakes. Down a little flight of stairs, you'll find a cozy cafe area decorated in a shabby chic style, perfect for girls in the mood to lunch on soup, sandwiches and sweets. The bakery isn't near any of Cincy's big tourist destinations; it's about a 10-minute drive from downtown. But it's worth the trip to discover this little gem.
