As the most well-known restaurant in the Amana Colonies, the Ox Yoke Inn has a reputation for ample portions of traditional German dishes. It won't disappoint in this regard, offering sauerbraten, jger schnitzel, a bratwurst and knackwurst platter, and of course, wiener schnitzel. The sauerbraten ($12 for a plate) comes with three generous slices of roast beef in a tangy, slightly sour gravy. The food comes either family style or as single plates, and the side dishes include mashed potatoes and gravy, hot vegetable, chilled salads and bread. Some sides, such as a bowl of corn, may be a bit underwhelming, and the meat in the hot roast beef open-faced sandwich has spent a little too long in the slow-cooker. Each table features a traditional jar of house-made strawberry jam that's tasty with a bit of bread and butter. The overall atmosphere is a bit less formal than the Ox Yoke's nearby neighbor restaurant, The Ronneburg. Servers don't wear German dress, and the menu features more non-German dishes such as a French dip sandwich ($8.50), Caesar salad ($10), citrus salmon ($13 plated) and breaded hot wings called Oxen Wings. At the end of the meal, servers bring out the pie tray -- a hard temptation to resist! There's also a little shop at the back of the restaurant selling Amana souvenirs. A visit to the Ox Yoke is an Amana tradition, and though it's a bit dowdy, it's a generally satisfying place to eat.
