A funky restaurant run by a fifth-generation baker, vegan-friendly Blue Planet promises tasty goodies, sandwiches, soups and salads.
The sparkling glass bubble cases at downtown Topeka's Blue Planet Cafe brim with fresh goods every morning starting at 6 a.m. Selections of giant brownies, chunky cookies and billowing muffins ($2 to $4) change daily based on fifth-generation baker-owner Linda Carson's serendipitous kitchen spirit. Guaranteed sell outs: oatmeal cinnamon-flax seed cookies and the "schizophrenic chocolate chips," an 1800s pioneer cookie recipe created when eggs and butter were in short supply. But there's no shortage of flavor and funk at Blue Planet Cafe. An extensive, varied menu written on giant chalkboards lists homemade soups, sandwiches and baked goods made of seasonal ingredients from local purveyors. Menus and the week's live entertainment, which includes music, films and poetry readings, get posted on the website. Linda claims there's not an egg in the landmark building, so all goodies are gluten-free and vegan-friendly. The Thai vegetarian ginger teriyaki seitan explodes with kicky taste. But meat-eaters aren't left out. We also liked the mushroom soup and pastrami sandwich on a multigrain roll ($6.50) with master brewed tea.
