Within the Royal Amsterdam Hotel, Monarchs has the look and feel of a steakhouse, with a spacious bar in the center of the main dining room. The restaurant has honed a pleasant, quiet atmosphere where couples and friends chat over salads and drinks prior to their main courses. Servers sport spiffy white shirts and aprons and have been trained to take care of guests without being intrusive or bothersome.
If you’re looking for authentic Dutch fare in Pella, you’ll probably be steered here. The food is a mixed bag though. A sweet mustard poppyseed dressing (too much of a good thing) overwhelmed the Dutch lettuce salad, and the Dutch spiced beef with red cabbage ($10.95) was mysteriously lacking any discernable spice. The grilled top sirloin ($12.95), however, proved satisfying—a prime cut cooked to medium-well just as requested. The 8-ounce portion was just right for diners who love steak but don't want to eat an overwhelming amount. On the side, the creamy mashed potatoes were tasty with bits of red skin for wonderful texture, and the accompanying vegetables had a bit of snap. For dessert, the molten lava brownie was fine but not mind-blowing.
Monarchs will do just fine for guests relaxing at the hotel and don't want to venture back out at the end of the day; but diners looking for a more exceptional dining experience may want to explore other options.
