Midwest Living Recommends
Aggieville, Kansas State University's bar and restaurant district, rocks into the wee hours and snoozes til noon.
It's a year-round block party in Aggieville, a square-mile bar-restaurant district across from Kansas State University. The neighborhood pulses strongest after hours, but during the day, shoppers frequent bookstores, coffeehouses and a few boutiques. Morro Street runs through the heart of Aggieville, anchored by Varney's, the KSU bookstore housed in a historic Art Deco-style movie theater. Enter below the flamingo-pink marquee into a purple world of Wildcat jerseys and campus gear. Across the street, Dusty Bookshelf packs tons of used books for generally half the cover price; paperbacks are $1. English majors love the tees imprinted with classic book cover designs (one of "Wuthering Heights" runs $25). As far as clothing shops in Aggieville, let's just say it's mostly bar-hopping styles. The Purple Pump has sky-high heels, but also cute flats ($30) and affordable costume jewelry. You'll find pop culture books ($10 to $50), jokester gifts, cards and fresh cut flowers at quirky Acme Gifts. Aggieville's Bluestem Bistro and Radina's coffee shops serve good pastries and sandwiches in comfy hangout spaces (free Wi-Fi). Retro cool Varsity Donuts recently opened. Kite's and Cozy Inn flip burgers. Coco Bolos cantina fuses Tex-Mex with global flavors. The So Long Saloon dishes Mexican and has an original 1800s carved bar from Wyoming.
