Abilene is way north of the border, but La Fiesta's authentic food and killer margaritas get you pretty close to Mexico.
Tucked behind Abilene's retro roadside America's Best Value/President's Inn next to I-70 is La Fiesta, a popular Mexican restaurant and local hangout. During peak dinner hours, there's often a wait, especially on Monday nights when most of Abilene's restaurants are shuttered and margaritas made of three kinds of imported tequila are half price. La Fiesta's large portions, good prices and refreshing beverages make the delay A-OK. The menu is huge, listing 20 appetizers and 30 taco, enchilada and burrito entree combos (starting at $8.50). Then there are fajitas, fish, steak and chicken dishes, plus daily specials to consider ($9$13). A basket of freshly fried tortillas warm to the touch and kicky salsa lands on your table the moment you sit down. Friendly, efficient servers weave through the lively restaurant expertly balancing food platters stretched down their forearms. For an adult beverage, appetizer and filling entree expect to spend $15 to $25. Our dessert pick is the honey and cinnamon sopapillas ($3.25). La Fiesta owner Noe Lara grew up in Mexico, and his granddad was from Abilene. His Mexican mom's influence shows in the restaurant's authentic food and festive, rambling hacienda decor.
