This throwback diner in Old Abilene Town dishes burgers, fish fries, omelets, cinnamon rolls and cement-thick milk shakes.
At Old Abilene Town's Hitching Post Restaurant, line cooks greet customers by their first names, and waiters ask regulars if it's "the usual?" For decades, local business people, farmers, ranchers, friends and families have slid into the orange booths for breakfast and lunch served daily at this cheery throwback mom-and-pop diner. The extensive menu lists plenty of stick-to-your-ribs homemade meals for up to $10. Choose from all-American standbys, including slabs of gravy slathered meat loaf, country fried steak, liver and onions, fluffy platter-size omelets and fist-thick burgers. Hearty soups (such as goulash and tomato) and entree specials change daily. On Fridays, eat Big Bob's fried fish. We love the juicy patty melt in marble rye and served with crispy fries and a creamy chocolate shake. Lunch sandwich specials, such as the chunky chicken salad wrap, run out fast. A homemade cinnamon roll or slice of $3 pie with strong cup of joe is tough to deny, so just give in to the homemade goodness. The Hitching Post is next to the General Store, which sells Kansas artisan crafts and kitschy tourist goodies.
